Pushing My Limits

One of the reasons I love photographing women on their wedding day is because they look so beautiful and they know it (in a non-conceited sort of way).  I love making women feel beautiful, sexy and confident because we so often doubt ourselves.  We worry so much about what others think that we forget how beautiful we are, what we can do, and how we shine.  Women are very fragile and if I can, for one day, make a woman feel good about herself, then I consider that to be a huge success.

This week I took part in a workshop/shoot-out on Staten Island organized by the fabulously talented Natalie Licini along with Jennifer Goldberg Rozenbaum of Jenerations Boudoir and Niel van Niekerk and held at Casa Belvedere (a non for profit organization that hosts small weddings and events.  A great location for an unconventional wedding).  I expected to be inspired and re-energized but what I didn’t expect was how much I would get out of and love the boudoir session taught by Jen.

Because, as I said, I love working with women and making them feel powerful and sexy, I wanted to learn more about how to beautifully pose a woman to most flatter her body, personality, and confidence.  Now, let me tell you, I NEVER thought I would want to do boudoir because, honestly, it scared me.  It scared me to be THAT much in charge of woman’s comfort level (after all, a bride in her full glory is much easier to bring out her confidence, she’s already glowing, then a woman stripped to her underwear).  But after seeing Jen work with the model and seeing her come to life and embrace every inch of her body, I was pushed beyond my limits and loved every moment of it.  This workshop really stretched me to think about how I pose my brides, how I really look at the female body and how we move.  So, here are some (and I apologize for not editing down more, but I just couldn’t choose) of my favorites from the boudoir section of our Triage.

To quote Audrey Hepburn, “I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls.”  I leave you with these final two images that just seem so pure and uninhibited and because they just bring a genuine smile to my face.  It’s as if she wasn’t even aware that there were 10 photographers pointing a camera at her.

Thank you Jennifer for being such an amazing teacher, Natalie for being so inspirational and putting together this Tri-age, and to Kristen for being such a super great and beautiful model.

I hope you have been inspired to push yourself beyond your limits and your comfort zone because you never know what great things will come out of it.

Until Next Time…

Tiffany and Ahmad {Engaged} | Central Park Wedding Photographer

She just finished line dancing, he just entered for a pool game.  Their reasons for being at that bar could not have been more different but fate knew what it was doing.  Tiffany and Ahmad’s best friends (the ones they happened to be with that night) had dated in high school, in fact, it was the same high school Tiffany and Ahmad had attended.  They didn’t know each other in high school but that night was to change everything.  It was the night that would start a relationship that would grow to happily ever after.

Tiffany and Ahmad are two of the sweetest people I’ve had the pleasure to work with.  They moved up to New Jersey from Florida in June and their Southern hospitality still beams from them every time I meet with them.  They are full of warmth, kindness and pure love.  Love for each other and their family.

We photographed their engagement session in Central Park, starting at Belvedere Castle where Ahmad proposed, and although it was colder than we expected for an October day, we had a blast. (The picture all the way to the right is a gorgeous 16 x 24 canvas hanging on their wall.)

Meet Tiffany’s beautiful children.  What an amazing family.

After a quick outfit change, we headed over to Shakespeare’s garden, one of my absolute favorite spots in Central Park (and they hold wedding ceremonies there during the summer all the time). You guys are gorgeous.

What a great time, great shoot, and a great couple.  Wait until you see their wedding pictures.

Until Next Time…

Celebrating Family and Giving Thanks

Ok,  I have been MIA for too long and there really is no excuse for it.  Sure, I could say that I’ve been busy and that a lot has been going on, but leaving my internet family alone during the holiday season (or in general) is not okay by me.  So, cyberworld, forgive my absence.  I would like to come back with a personal post about giving thanks and how I celebrated my Thanksgiving.

During the month of November I had made a 30 day commitment to post onto Facebook one thing for which I am thankful.  Now, I am the type of person to normally see the glass as half-full, to see the possibilities in every struggle and situation, but my husband and I have been struggling the last year and a half and life was starting to bog me down so this challenge couldn’t come at a better time.  What I learned during those 30 days is how much I really do have to be thankful.  Making a commitment to wake up everyday and find one thing in my life to be thankful for has really awakened my motivation and drive to see the positivity in my life again and the drive to succeed no matter the path I choose.

So, as Thanksgiving came and passed (and yes I realize we are in December and quickly approaching Christmas) I would like to say how grateful I am for my husband, the support of my friends and family, the passion I have been blessed with to pursue life to the fullest of the gifts it has to offer, and to the path I have chosen to pursue in my business.  I have re-committed to live life with passion, heart, soul and faith.  I hope you choose to do the same and remember that no matter what life throws at you, if you work hard and have faith the path will be made clear and reasons for what is happening will shine (if not right away then one day).  I’m still facing life one day at a time and choosing to commit to having faith, but I sure am making big plans and dreams to follow, pursue, and cherish as each milestone is met.

Here is a glimpse of my Thanksgiving spent with my brother, sister-in-law, her parents, my crazy nephews and my incredible husband.  In short, my amazing family.

I’d like to thank my brother for stealing my camera and taking this picture of Charlie and me.  I don’t get in front of the camera much, so it is nice to have this.

I sneaked around to grab this picture:

It really was a beautiful, almost magical, night.  Although I wish I lived in the big city of Manhattan and I could write a thousand posts about the magic of New York, there are times that the quiet and beauty of the suburbs has to be noticed because it can be quite tranquil and peaceful.

Until Next Time…

Michelle Edgerton D. - Greetings Michelle, I am the OTHER Michelle Edgerton. I imagine you were aware of me at some time since the internet, but since then, I have remarried, changing my name. I really enjoyed your Thanksgiving blog, (sent to me by FB for some reason) and was pleased to realize that we share many feelings and thoughts in common. Have a wonderful holiday my dear, and thank you for a most welcome bit of holiday warmth. Michelle

A Multicultural Wedding {Ashley + Matthijs} | Hudson Valley Photographer

Ashley and Matthijs come from very different worlds, she is from Ohio and he from the Netherlands, but their love of travel has taken them all around the world together and what more perfect a place to celebrate their union than at the Round Hill House at the Hudson Valley, NY?  This couple is incredible to be around and it is very easy to see why they love each other and why they have such close friends and families.

When I was introduced to Ashley as she was getting ready the first words out of her mouth were “Thank you for coming to my wedding!”  I mean, really, can’t you just melt?  I was working but she was so thankful to have people as a part of this day and not only did it just make me swoon but I could not stop smiling (nor could anyone else) the whole night.  This wedding was filled with traditions (new and old), friends, laughter, love and joy, oh so much joy.

The day started with the bride getting ready followed by a first look.  I LOVE first looks because the bride and groom have a chance to enjoy each other, to look at each other and take in the moment.  The pictures come out relaxed and we have time to make sure the images are magical.  This also gives the couple a chance to enjoy their cocktail hour and it gives the groom the time to really enjoy his bride walking towards him because he isn’t taking everything in at the same time.  The emotions of the day are so different when a first look is involved.

The ceremony was performed partly by Ashley’s father and partly by Matthijs’s mother.  Matthijs repeated his vows in English and Ashley repeated hers in Dutch.  It was a ceremony filled with family and love… and I just love that look on Matthijs’s face as he welcomes his bride to the front of the aisle.

After the ceremony we had a few more picture opportunities and then off to a wonderful reception.

And this….
That’s what happens when you get a bunch of performers under one roof with music and merriment…or just music:)

The bride and groom made their grand exit through a flurry of sparkles.

I still can not get over the magic there was in this wedding.  The love between everyone, the sweetness and the hospitality left me breathless.

Thank you guys so very much for having me be a part of your day.

Until Next Time…

The Reason I Believe in True Love

There is nothing in this world that inspires me more than marriage and I am a firm believer that true love exists.  This is why I chose wedding photography. I love to be there capturing the moment when man and woman become husband and wife, uniting them as a team, a unit, forever to work with each other to make the impossible possible.  The reason I believe in this so whole hearted is because of my husband.  Charlie makes loving him just so easy.

Today we celebrate 12 years of being together (not just as husband and wife but in total) and I couldn’t consider myself anymore blessed.  When Charlie and I met it was, honestly, like all the stars aligned for us to be together.  We had been working at Barnes and Noble together but always different shifts and different ends of the store.  One day, due to circumstances, we happened to spend the whole day working side by side and the more we talked, the more I knew that I wanted to get to know this amazing man as much as I can.  Two weeks after that fateful day, my Prince moved an hour and a half away and we only saw each other 2 times a week.  But we knew that this is it, this is for the long haul.

When we married, Charlie promised to be my best friend and keeper of my dreams.  He promised to support me no matter what and this is just what he has done.  I have gone through so many changes in my life, over come many obstacles, and took on lots of challenges head on.  I am not easy to live with.  I am stubborn, emotional, spacey at times, but no matter what, I know that I will always have and have always had my man by my side pushing me and supporting me.  Now, I don’t say that marriage is easy, but Charlie certainly does not make it feel like work.  My husband knows me better than anyone else and I am thankful that through unemployment, through surgery, through health challenges, through good and bad he has been there to hold my hand.

I recently had a photo shoot done for promotional material for my business and I couldn’t even CONSIDER not including Charlie as part of my shoot as he is such an integral part of my business and the driving force behind most things I do.  The following pictures were all taken by Mike Larson of Mike Larson, Inc. and I think it is so important to stop and remember the people that matter most to you and capture the special moments you have with them.

Honey, you make me feel special, confident, and beautiful every time you look at me.  I love you more than I could ever say.  Thank you for choosing me.

Until next time…
